the computer guys use this for a safe work surface.. they connect the mat to earth ground, then simply clip on their wrist strap and let static charge flow from their body to the mat and to ground. the idea is to keep from shocking or “zapping” the sensitive IC chips. I like the 4ft wide as i can really spread my elbows out and have a safe place for the boards too. try to have a nice dedicated space to work on stuff, well lit and don’t have to move if not quite finished…
